Emergency Medical Responder (Texas ECR)/Emergency Care Attendant (ECA)
Course Description: As an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)/ Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) you will learn how to stabilize a patient prior to the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Topics within the course covers patient assessment, treatment, and the use of various medical equipment. The EMR/ECA certified person can be utilized in many areas such as industrial plants, some paid EMS/Fire Departments, and Volunteer Fire Departments.
The EMR/ECA course is a 76 hour course and meets the National Standard Curriculum core competencies. The course consists of classroom lectures, tests, homework, quizzes, and hands-on skills training. Once the student successfully completes all of the required didactic/psychomotor course work and skills of this course they will be eligible to test with the National Registry of EMT's. They have 3 attempts within 2 years to take and pass the Computer Based Test (CBT) Exam. Then they will receive certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) as an ECA/EMR.
Course Requirements: There is an application process. Students can be 17 years old or older to attend. Submit evidence of a GED or a High School Diploma (if a student is in high school they must submit evidence of enrollment). Submit a criminal background check. Students are expected to put in time outside of class in order to be successful in this class.
Target Audience: The course can be conducted anywhere where a classroom is available on mutually agreed dates/times and locations. Typically, these courses can be done at Volunteer Fire Departments.
