EMT
Emergency Medical Technician
Course Description: The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course prepares individuals to provide emergency medical care and transportation of critical and non-emergent patients within an EMS system. EMT's possess the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients, ranging from emergent/non-emergent patient transports. They function as members of a comprehensive EMS response system operating under medical oversight. EMT's perform interventions using the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance, serving as a vital connection between emergency scenes and the healthcare system. The EMT can be utilized in many areas such as industrial plants with Emergency Response Teams (ERT's), some paid EMS/Fire Departments, and Volunteer Fire Departments.
The EMT course is a 164 hour course and meets the National Standard Curriculum core competencies. The course consists of classroom lectures, tests, homework, quizzes, and hands-on skills training. There is a 60-hour clinical/field requirement with skills objectives that must be met to complete this portion of the course. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to observe and assist hospital and EMS providers by accompanying them in the Emergency Room and/or ambulance units. While in clinical, EMT students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the EMT program. Once the student successfully completes all of the required didactic/psychomotor course work and skills of this course they will be eligible to test with the National Registry of EMT's. They have 6 attempts within 2 years to take and pass the Computer Based Test (CBT) Exam. Then they will receive certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) as an EMT.
Course Requirements: There is an application process. Students can be 17 years old or older to attend. Submit evidence of a GED or a High School Diploma (if a student is in high school they must submit evidence of enrollment). There is also required documentation needed to be provided by the student such as immunizations, background checks, and other items listed in a Course Enrollment Package.
Target Audience: The course can be conducted anywhere where a classroom is available on mutually agreed dates/times and locations. Typically, these courses can be done at Volunteer Fire Departments and other areas with available classrooms.
